Origins(History)
-It started in of India in sixty century B.C. Buddhism is 2,500 years old.
And one of the leader of the Buddhism , Prince Suddartha(also known as Buddha.) was born in Lumbini Nepal, which was originally in northern part of India but present part of Nepal. One day he went out of his castle for a walk and he saw suffering, people were dying without food and sickness. Suddartha was shocked.When he was 29 he left his family and decided to meditate. He meditated for 6years and became enlightened. People was surprised since it is very hard to meditate for 10 minute because it is hard to not think of anything and relax.

There are 350~500 million followers in the world for buddhism.It is 4th largest religion in the world. People who follow Buddhism are called Buddhists, and they are divided into two groups: ordained monks and lay-people. Buddhism is the oldest religion in China so that is why China is the country with the most population with Buddhist. 18% of the Chinese are Buddhism.

Eight-Fold Path is the Basic Beliefs of Buddhism.
-Right understanding: Understanding that the Four Noble Truths are noble and true.
-Right thought: Determining and resolving to practice Buddhist faith.
-Right speech: Avoiding slander, gossip, lying, and all forms of untrue and abusive speech.
-Right conduct: Adhering to the idea of nonviolence (ahimsa), as well as refraining from any form of stealing or sexual impropriety.
-Right means of making a living: Not slaughtering animals or working at jobs that force you to violate others.
-Right mental attitude or effort: Avoiding negative thoughts and emotions, such as anger and jealousy.
-Right mindfulness: Having a clear sense of one’s mental state and bodily health and feelings.
-Right concentration: Using meditation to reach the highest level of enlightenment.

Important Holidays
The date of the holidays of Buddhism are based on the lunar calendar. Buddha Day; Every May on the night when the full moon comes up that's when all the Buddhist over the world celebrates the birth ,enlightenment and death of Buddha over 2,500 years ago. On the festival day lay people will go to monastery or the local temple in the morning. And offer food to the monks and take Five precept and listen to Dharma talks. In the afternoon they share food to poor to make merit. This day will conclude with evening chanting of the Buddha’s meditation and teaching. |

Pagodas the temple is tiered tower with multiple eaves. It was built in transition way in South Asia. Especially in Nepal, India, Japan, Korea, Vietnam & Burma. Some Buddhists don't go to temples but they stay in they're home like put a statues or a picture of a god like hinduism and wish wishes.
What do they do in the temple? They pray to Buddha. They wish they're wishes to Buddha and believe he will listen to they're wishes.

Religious text of Buddhism is called The Tripitaka (Pali Canon). Tripitaka was handed down orally, then written down in the third century B.C.E. Tripitaka is written in an ancient Indian language called. Pali which is very close to the language that Buddha spoke. Tripitka is a large book the English translation nearly took forty volumes.
The book is based one Buddha's teachings. One set is by Council of Monks of the Theravada school and the other one by the Mahayana school . They Both were similar.
The three section of the Tripitaka (three baskets of Wisdom) are
1. Vinaya Pitaka (the Discipline Basket) - A rule book for monks and nuns There are 227 rules for monks,and more for nuns.
2. Sutta Pitaka (the Teaching Basket)- The actual experiences of Buddha
3. Abhidhamma Pitaka (the Higher Doctrine Basket)- An explanation on the teaching of Buddha. Most of these are called Sutras
